50 things you never knew about the London Underground (!!!)

1. There is only one tube station name which does not have any letters of the word "mackerel" in it - St John's Wood.
2. There are only two tube stations which have all five vowels in them - Mansion House and South Ealing.
3. Considering there are 287 tube stations, things 1 and 2 are quite surprising.
4. Chancery Lane has the shortest escalator on the system - 50 steps.
5. Travelling on the tube for 40 minutes is the equivalent of smoking two cigarettes - so save yourself a packet, all you smokers and get on the tube more often.
6. The shortest distance between tube stations is Leicester Square and Covent Garden on the Piccadilly line - 0.16 miles.
7. The most popular route for tourists is Leicester Square to Covent Garden on the Piccadilly line. It is quicker to walk this distance than travel on the tube.
8. The only tube station which shares the name of a well known pop group is All Saints (yeah I know it's on the Docklands Light Railway - but it's still on the tube map).
9. The phrase "Mind the Gap" originated on the Northern line.
10. The Jubilee line was originally going to be called the Fleet line.
11. Northfields station on the Piccadilly line was the first to use kestrels and hawks to kill pigeons and stop them setting up homes in stations.
12. The Central line covers the longest route - from West Ruislip to Epping you will travel 34 miles without changing.
13. The Waterloo and City line covers the shortest route - 2 kilometres, but considering it only covers two stations - Waterloo and Bank, it doesn't take Stephen Hawkins to work that one out.
14. The oldest tube line in the world is the Metropolitan line. It opened on the 10th January 1863.
15. Tube carriages originally had no windows and buttoned upholstery and were nicknamed "padded cells". No change there then.
16. Men have to sit with their legs apart when travelling on the tube. This is due to special magnetic fibres on the upholstery of the seats which interacts with testosterone to provide an antimagnetic outward force. :))))
17. Julian Lloyd Webber was London Underground's first official busker - I didn't know he needed the money that badly.
18. More of the London Underground is open than in a tunnel. Tell yourself this fact if you suffer from claustrophobia.

34. Mosquitoes that live in the underground have evolved into a completely different species, one that appears separated from the above ground mozzie by over a thousand years.

41. Anthea Turner and her sister Wendy have written a series of children's books about mice living on the London Underground. An estimated half a million mice live in the Underground system so that should keep them both busy for a while.
42. Only one person was ever born in a tube carriage and her name is Thelma Ursula Beatrice Eleanor - check out her initials. She was born in 1924 on a Bakerloo line train at Elephant & Castle.
43. The Gappe is a little known bird/bat like creature, which only tube announcers can see and we are often told to mind them.
44. Victoria and King's Cross record the highest number of tube suicides each year. This isn't surprising as Victoria is the tube's busiest station with 85 million passengers each year and King's Cross has 70 million passengers each year.

46. Christopher Lee and Donald Pleasance starred in a 1970s horror film called Death Line (a.k.a Raw Meat), where man eating troglodytes terrorised people on the London Underground.

48. A fragrance called "Madeleine" was introduced at St James Park, Euston and Piccadilly station in an effort to make the tube smell better on 23rd March 2001. It was taken out of action on 24th March 2001 as it was making people feel sick.
49. The sexiest film scene featuring the London Underground is The Wings of the Dove. Helena Bonham Carter and Linus Roache travel in a 19th century carriage together, then get off and make love in a lift. Who said there's no romance on the tube?

Pentru ca nu suntem atenti pe unde mergem in fiecare zi

(ignorand faptul ca in Bucuresti nu poti sa fotografiezi fara sa se uite urat la tine 3 tigani, nu poti sa scoti camera din geanta fara sa se gandeasca 2 in jurul tau cum sa ti-o fure si, oricum, nu poti sa mergi in ritm de plimbare duminicala fara sa te inghionteasca unul din spate).

Sicilia oamenilor de rand

Cine crede ca Sicilia este ruda de la tara a Italiei, locul in care e mai bine sa nu opresti daca te afli cu masina prin zona, caci ai putea sa ramai fara cauciucuri, trebuie ca fie nu a cunoscut-o, fie a trecut cu ochii inchisi pe langa ea.

Sicilia zilelor noastre are parfumul zilelor de altadata din filmele mafiote, aroma florii de leandru crescuta ca de niciunde in stanca si o amestecatura de epoci care au tot traversat-o. Salbaticia si reticenta la mirajul mondializarii este tocmai savoarea Siciliei in ochii aventurierului profesionist, care pleaca la drum cu alte ganduri decat cel de a calatori la all inclusive.

Inconjurata din toate partile de apele turcoaz ale Marii Tireniene si ale Mediteranei si cu o distanta cu putin peste 300 de kilometri de la est la vest, insula te copleseste si te surprinde pe masura ce o parcurgi. Daca varful de peste 3000 de metri al muntelui Etna, cel mai mare vulcan activ din Europa, domina centrul insulei, restul locului este mai mult sihastru. Tinutul deluros se amesteca cu campia arida si doar ici si colo, pe cate o colina, mai vezi cate o asezare umana, ramasa fie de pe vremurile romanilor, arabilor, grecilor sau ale popoarelor nomade care obisnuiau sa-si construiasca cetati la inaltime, acolo unde cotropitorii ajungeau greu.


Oraselul tipic sicilian nu are mai mult de cateva zeci de mii de locuitori si miroase a piatra neslefuita, a portocala rosie si a canoli, desertul tipic sicilian din crema imbracata intr-un rulou crocant. Casuta traditionala are o culoare calda, de pamant si este imbracata toata in verde, crescut spontan pe casa si pe langa casa. Asezarea colinara a oraselor face ca stradutele inguste si nu mai putin celebre ale insulei, sa urce si sa coboare intr-un labirint fascinant pentru calatorul hoinar.

Mafiotii zilelor noastre
Daca te duci sa vizitezi Sicilia in cautarea don-ilor mafioti, vei fi surprins sa descoperi ca sicilienii de azi nu amintesc deloc de asta si nici nu le prea place hollywood-izarea povestilor locale. De altfel, ei nici nu exploateaza asa de mult istoria mafiota in suveniruri si obiecte de podoaba – prefera mai degraba legendele vulcanului Etna, din lava caruia confectioneaza obiecte decorative si se mandresc cu ramasitele arhitecturale ale neamurilor care, in trecerea lor prin Sicilia, au lasat azi multe vestigii.

Daca in unele orase mai exista reminiscente ale famigli-ilor de altadata, urmasilor nu li se spune niciodata pe nume sau sunt numiti simplu cavagliere. Daca un sicilian iti arata un mosneag cam pipernicit si incruntat si iti spune, aratand cu un deget spre obraz ca si cum s-ar cresta, ca acela este un cavagliere, atunci sa stii ca face parte dintr-o famiglia.

Multe ruine

E o surpriza pentru multi dintre occidentali sa descopere diversitatea culturala siciliana. Pentru ca dincolo de legendistica haimanalelor si golanilor moderni, Sicilia pastreaza si azi cate un templu grecesc construit ca la carte sau o prima forma de asezare umana, exemplar conservata miilor de turisti germani sau englezi care vin in vizita in fiecare an.

Un exemplu: Grotele Saracinilor (populatie nord-africana, de statura pitica, care a invadat insula in secolul 9) de langa micul orasel Calascibetta, in provincia Enna. Sunt forme de locuinta miniaturala, sculptate in munte - infricosatoare si impresionante in acelasi timp. Este uluitor cum puteau sa locuiasca inghesuiti in mici gropite sapate in stanca si fascinant cum micile lor locuinte de 2 metri erau inca pe atunci compartimentate in spatiu de dormit, spatiu de gatit si spatiu de depozitat.

Despre globalizare

Daca nu te grabesti sa vezi Sicilia ca o forma de necivilizare, conform standardelor de viata moderne, atunci vei aprecia produsele de panificatie proaspete din micutele pasticerii locale, absenta marilor lanturi hoteliere si a reclamelor la marile restaurante fast-food.

Si in primul si-n primul rand, nici o reclama la Vodafone si nici macar un blackberry.

Huo! N-am mai intrat de mult aici dar in fine, acum 2 min. cand am vrut sa reascult cantecul ala frumos pe care l-am postat putin mai jos, AM CONSTATAT CA Ornella Vanoni NU MAI EXISTA si, in locul ei, canta O BUBUIALA SINISTRA!!! O bubuiala EMO!

Un INTRUS a intrat si A SCHIMBAT CANTECUL! Cantecul meu frumos pentru care o sa dau acatist la biserica sa reapara :(((( Huo!
